Liposuction Atlanta

No matter your diet and exercise regimen, as you age, your body will likely develop stubborn fat that just won’t budge, regardless of how many calories you consume (or don’t consume), your cardio routine, or how many reps you do in the gym.

Compounding the problem is that our metabolism slows as we age, which makes it easier for these fat deposits to accumulate. The end result? Everything from love handles to double chins to thunder thighs. If you’ve been unable to burn away this excess fat, then liposuction might be right for you. In fact, more and more people in the Greater Atlanta area are turning to liposuction to sculpt the bodies they haven’t been able to get in the gym.

Is Liposuction Right for Me?

Liposuction surgery is not an alternative to diet and exercise, or to be used as an answer for obesity. Liposuction provides the best, long-lasting results for those who are healthy, but struggling to lose areas of unwanted fat despite exercise and eating healthy. Liposuction can be used to treat a variety of problem areas including:

  • Love handles and hips
  • Abdomen
  • Upper arms
  • Buttocks and back
  • Thighs and knees
  • Bra rolls
  • Male chest (gynecomastia)

If you are relatively healthy and traditional fat-burning methods haven’t worked, then liposuction is a safe and effective method that can reshape your body and restore a healthier appearance that matches your inner health.

Which Liposuction Procedure Will Be Used?

How your liposuction procedure is done depends on the specific technique that’s used:

  • Tumescent liposuction is the most common type of liposuction. A sterile solution containing salt water, an anesthetic, and epinephrine is injected into the site. The salt water aids fat removal, while the anesthetic relieves pain and epinephrine causes the blood vessels to constrict. After small cuts are made on your skin, a thin tube called a cannula is inserted under your skin. The cannula is connected to a vacuum that suctions fat and fluids from your body. Your body fluid might be replenished through an intravenous (IV) line.
  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction is a type of liposuction that is sometimes used in conjunction with tumescent liposuction. During ultrasound-assisted liposuction, a metal rod that emits ultrasonic energy is inserted under your skin. This ruptures the fat cell walls and liquefies the fat for easier removal.
  • Laser-assisted liposuction is a technique that uses high-intensity laser light to liquefy fat for removal. During laser-assisted liposuction, a laser fiber that is inserted through a small incision emulsifies fat deposits. The fat is then removed via a cannula.
  • Powered liposuction uses a cannula that moves in a rapid back-and-forth motion. This vibration allows tough fat to be pulled out more easily. Powered liposuction might sometimes cause less pain and swelling and can allow for more precise removal of fat, especially on smaller areas, such as the arms, knees or ankles.

What to Expect with Your Liposuction

Some liposuction procedures require only local or regional anesthesia, while others require general anesthesia. In either situation, you might be given a sedative, typically through an IV injection, to help you remain calm and relaxed. The liposuction procedure might last up to several hours, depending on how much fat is removed.

If your liposuction procedure requires general anesthesia, then you’ll wake up in the recovery room. Generally, most patients go home the same day, but, on occasion, an overnight stay in the hospital might be required

You should expect some pain, swelling, and bruising after the procedure. You might need to wait a few days before returning to work and a few weeks before resuming your normal activities – including exercise.

To help control pain, you might be prescribed medication. In addition, to reduce the risk of infection, you will likely be prescribed antibiotics. For several weeks, you might also need to wear a tight compression garment to help reduce swelling. During this time, as the remaining fat settles into position, you can expect some contour, which is normal and nothing to worry about.
